Celebrating life spreading joy in Ylocos Kannawidan Fest
The festival in the Province of Ilocos Sur, known as the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival, is held annually in January to celebrate the historical separation of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte in 1818. The festival highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Ilocanos through various indigenous performances such as traditional dances, songs, and theatrical performances. Religious rituals are also a significant part of the festival, with a grand procession of saints and the traditional "kakanin" offering to the patron saint of Ilocos Sur, Saint Paul.
Aside from cultural presentations, the festival also features cooking demonstrations that showcase the best of Ilocano cuisine, such as the famous bagnet, longganisa, empanada, and pinakbet. There are also local trade fairs and exhibits that display the products of Ilocos Sur, such as handwoven fabrics, pottery, and handicrafts.
The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival is an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in the vibrant culture of the Ilocanos and experience their way of life. It also serves as a platform to promote and preserve their cultural traditions for future generations.
